Olympic history was created in the women’s 71kg weightlifting event in Paris 2024 when Olivia Reeves of the USA took first place and set a new 117kg Olympic snatch mark.

She then added a clean and jerk weighing 145 kg to her total weight of 262 kg. Mari Leivis Sanchez of Colombia won silver with a 257 kg total that included a 112 kg snatch and a 145 kg clean and jerk. Angie Paola Palacios Dajomes of Ecuador won bronze with a 116 kg snatch and a 140 kg clean and jerk, totaling 256 kg.

This is the first Olympic weightlifting championship title for the United States since Tara Nott won the flyweight event in Sydney 2000. Reeves, 21, is competing in her maiden Olympics.Looking anxious, the top-seeded Olivia Reeves lifted her 112 kg in the first round of snatching.

She was obviously more at ease when she made her next appearance, snatching 115kg and leaping off the platform with joy. However, the world record holder for snatching, Palacios Dajomes, set a new Olympic record in that specific lift, weighing 116 kg, on the third round.

Reeves beat her in record time, lifting 117 kg to establish a new Olympic record. In the clean and Jerk, Sanchez achieved a 145 kg lift; Reeves met her mark and attempted to improve on it on her last try at 150 kg, but she was unable to complete the lift and took home the gold medal with a 262 kg total.

For all three of the ladies on the podium, these are their first Olympic medals. While Palacios Dajomes, 23, placed sixth in the 64kg event in Tokyo 2020, Reeves and Sanchez are competing in their maiden Olympics.

Following her last lift, Reeves and her longtime instructor Steve Fauer exchanged a lengthy embrace. Regarding her gold medal winning performance, Reeves remarked, “I’m very excited, overwhelmed, but I’m very grateful.”

“I sincerely hope I achieved that 150 kg.” I think I prepared fairly well for this meet, but I’m excited about the next one.””They rank higher than any other competition, it just doesn’t feel real right now,” she continued.

Reeves and fellow weightlifter Hampton Morris, who won bronze in the 61kg class, are the first American weightlifters to medal at the Olympics in Paris 2024; their victories mark the nation’s first in the sport since Los Angeles 1984.
