Bowlers are the smart ones’ – Indian triumphant fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah on why bowlers should be given leadership roles

Jasprit Bumrah, the Indian pace bowler and captain of the Mumbai Indians, feels that bowlers are the “smart ones” and are “not behind a bat and are ready-made for captaincy,” he said.

Bumrah had subtle jibe by referring Kapil Dev and Imran Khan their triumph as captains of the opposition team. ‘There was never a boring game at all,’ said Bumrah, adding that ‘I feel bowlers are smart people because they have to get the batsmen out.

‘We bowl, while batsmen are behind the armoury; we are not behind a flat wicket. ’ They stand right in the firing line, too; when a team loses, it is mostly the bowlers who are held responsible, which makes it tough ‘We have seen Pat Cummins really doing well.

In childhood, I used to watch Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis both as captains and that probably shaped my decision. Kapil Dev has bought us a World Cup.

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had once claimed that he has won a World Cup for Pakistan. So bowlers are the brainy people if you ask me. ” I know our country loves big batsmen and fair enough, but for me, bowlers drive the game,” said Bumrah who has the experience of leading India in a Test match and two T20Is.

Echoing similar sentiments, Bumrah said ‘I’m from a generation that was once told that Test cricket was more on television and, to this date, I believe it is the greatest format because I always felt that if I succeed in this format, the others will follow.

Also, there appeared no split between batters and bowlers in the Indian team. Discriminating on the leaders he has reported to, Bumrah lauded the character of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and the good leadership structure in the team.

A person who can feel the players and also has an idea of what a particular player is undergoing through; Rohit is flexible and can be corrected easily.

Jasprit Bumrah said about Dhoni

Dhoni has had the confidence in him as soon as his IPL performance saw him earn an India call-up and Bumrah came up through the ranks to make his ODI debut while Dhoni was captain in Sydney against Australia in January 2016.

I got a lot of security from [MS]Dhoni very early into the set-up. He relies a lot on gut feeling and is known to downplay the concept of strategising.

Now Virat Kohli is not the captain, but he is still a leader, captaincy is a post, but a team is run by 11 people: Virat showed that he is enthusiastic, energetic person and he had a challenge which changed the story.
